Landscaping Around Septic Drain Fields in Boise, ID

At ASAP Septic, we are passionate about sharing information about septic tanks and systems around Boise, Idaho, because we want our potential clients to have as few concerns about their installed septic system as possible. Part of avoiding problems is planning ahead regarding the factors that can affect your system. Major aspects to consider include how your landscaping and the location of the tank site within your yard could affect the reliability and safety of your septic system.

Some factors to consider include:

Location, Location, Location: The stability of your drain field (i.e. where wastewater is treated and released into the soil) is of paramount importance.

  • Avoid planting trees or shrubs or anything with deep roots over or near the drain field since those roots can cause damage or blockages to the tank or underground plumbing. There are many beautiful landscaping options–wildflowers, ornamental plants, and more–that will make your yard picture perfect without compromising your septic system.

  • Avoid pouring cement or other foundations for spaces like patios or playgrounds directly over your septic area. The additional pressure and the frequent use can also affect the reliability of your septic system. Also, having a cement pad over a septic area increases the cost of repairs should you need access to your septic tank. There is a possibility you would have to break up and re-pour a cement pad to complete those repairs.

  • If you are newly installing a septic system and have the ability to select a location from scratch, work with experts like those at ASAP Septic to find a spot in your yard that does not collect excess rainwater. Just like excessive watering (see below), too much rainwater gathering in your drain field can cause a slow drain in your septic system.

Watering Schedule: Much of Boise and the surrounding areas rely on irrigation water for yard maintenance. Some people prefer a schedule of watering heavily on some days, taking a break, and then saturating again a few days–or even a week–later. This is not ideal for your septic system.

  • You are more likely to have a long-lasting, problem-free septic area if you water more moderately, more often. The same amount of water is used, but less of it penetrates the drain field, reducing the chance of costly issues.
