How to Clean Out Your RV Tank in Boise, ID

Whether you are taking a local RV trip near Boise, Idaho or preparing for a cross country adventure, it is important to know how to properly maintain your grey and black water tanks for the health of you, your passengers and the environment. Follow these tips to ensure safe travel:

  • Always dump your black-water tank first: Dumping the water from the black tank first ensures that the water from the gray tank can clean the debris from the hose.

  • Know when to dump: Wait until the black-water tank is 2/3 full before you dump it. If there are others waiting behind you at the dump station, you can skip the hose rinsing and tank flushing.

  • Choose the right hoses: You'll want a heavy-duty 6 - 8 foot sewer hose for easier handling. Its also a good idea to keep a second hose for rinsing (since dump stations don't always have one). To avoid contamination of drinking water, it is very important to store these camper septic hoses away your drinking water hose and to never allow your freshwater hose to be used for rinsing the tanks, sewer hoses or dump station area.

  • Prevent future problems: Don't leave the black-water tank valve open when hooked up at a campsite. If you do, the solid waste will harden on the bottom of the tank. Also be sure to only dump the contents of your holding tanks into the dump station. Any other materials like wrappers or other waste can cause the station to back up.

  • Be safe: Wear latex gloves when dumping and leave the dump station area as clean as it was when you arrived to keep yourself and others as safe as possible.
