How Much Does It Cost to Have Your Septic Tank Pumped?
One of the main reasons property owners neglect do not pump
out their septic tank regularly is fear of the cost. Unfortunately, neglecting
to get the tank pumped every 2-5 years can cause big problems and lead to a
septic tank or system replacement.
Replacing a septic system can cost anywhere between $5,000 -
$10,000. However, depending on the type of system, quality of soil, and tank
material, properly maintained septic systems can last anywhere from 25-50
years.
Septic Tank Cleaning &
Pumping Costs
The cost to pump a septic tank depends on four things:
household size, tank size, frequency, and location. According to HomeAdvisor,
costs typically run between $200 - $900, with the average cost around $400.
Obviously, the more people you have in your household,
the more frequently you need your tank pumped. Larger tanks need to be emptied
less frequently, but cost a little more to pump.
What Happens If
You Don’t Pump Your Septic Tank
The contents of your septic tank separate into three
distinct layers. The bottom “sludge” layer consists of solids; liquids make up
the middle layer; fats and oils float on top to form the “scum” layer.
The liquids are the only layer meant to exit the tank.
The sludge stays on the bottom and slowly breaks down over time, and the scum
stays floating on top. The bottom sludge layer gradually builds up. If not
pumped out, the sludge will seep into the drainage pipes and out into the
leach/drain field, which will clog the system.
When this happens, if you don’t get professional help
immediately, you could end up with septic flooding, sewage in the yard, or a
total system failure.
